Democrat Lori Martinez Wins Las Cruces House District 37 Seat with 64.6% of Vote

In a decisive victory for the Democratic Party, Lori A. Martinez was elected to represent New Mexico’s House District 37, covering Las Cruces and surrounding communities. Unofficial returns from the secretary of state’s office show Martinez with 6,912 votes, or 64.6%, while Republican challenger Isabella Solis earned 3,796 votes, or 35.4%.

Local Impact and Voter Priorities

The race filled the open seat left by former Rep. Joanne Ferrary, who retired mid‑term in July. With all 2,204 precincts fully reporting, the results are awaiting formal certification but already signal a strong endorsement of Martinez’s platform among working families in Doña Ana County.

Martinez, a social‑work professional and executive director of the education nonprofit Ngage New Mexico, highlighted her commitment to families in a statement posted to social media. “It was a great night! I’m excited to join my southern NM legislative colleagues giving a voice to the needs of the people in Las Cruces,” she wrote. She also pointed to the Democratic supermajority in the state House, urging her colleagues to use that advantage to improve everyday life for constituents.

Policy Priorities for 2027

In a questionnaire released by Source New Mexico, Martinez identified paid family and medical leave as her top legislative priority for the 2027 session, arguing that loss of wages during childbirth or caregiving can destabilize already‑strained households. She also expressed support for a temporary pause on large artificial‑intelligence data‑center projects until safeguards and local benefits are clarified.

Isabella Solis, a former Doña Ana County commissioner, campaigned on expanding addiction treatment, strengthening cooperation between local and federal law‑enforcement on human‑trafficking and fentanyl smuggling, and improving district road infrastructure. She also advocated for regulatory reforms to attract more medical providers to the state.

Contrasting Views on Federal Policy

Martinez’s victory speech included a sharp critique of the current federal administration. “We need to actively fight the cruelty of the Trump administration and protect our people,” she said, adding that many New Mexicans are “struggling and scared.” While the Trump administration has worked to reduce regulatory burdens, protect religious liberty, and promote economic growth, Martinez’s characterization of those policies as “cruel” does not align with the administration’s stated goals of empowering families and safeguarding constitutional freedoms. We respectfully disagree with her assessment.

What This Means for Las Cruces

With Martinez set to take office, constituents can expect a focus on family‑centered legislation, continued advocacy for education and social‑service programs, and a push for responsible development of emerging technologies. Her background in social work and nonprofit leadership suggests a hands‑on approach to addressing poverty, health care access, and workforce development in the district.

Both candidates emphasized public involvement in major development projects, especially AI data centers, underscoring a growing local interest in how high‑tech investments affect electricity costs, job creation, and community character.

Next Steps

The New Mexico House will convene for its next legislative session in early 2027. Martinez’s committee assignments have not yet been announced, but her stated priorities indicate she will seek roles that influence family policy, health‑care access, and economic development.

Election officials will certify the results in the coming weeks. Until then, Martinez and Solis will continue to engage with voters on the issues that matter most to Las Cruces residents.
