The Downtown Dayton Partnership announced that the beloved Dayton Holiday Festival’s Grande Illumination tree lighting will now take place on Friday, Dec. 4, from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. in downtown Dayton. The official lighting of the holiday tree is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. on the Courthouse Square stage.
Why the date change?
Laura Woeste, interim president of the Downtown Dayton Partnership, explained that moving the kickoff away from the day after Thanksgiving helps families avoid travel conflicts and preserves the tradition for future generations. “Mrs. Kettering started the festival in 1972 so that all children could enjoy the holiday season regardless of their economic means,” Woeste said. “We’re proud to continue the tradition and excited to mix it up a little this year with some changes and the inclusion of a Dayton holiday icon in The Arcade. Even longstanding traditions can use a little refresh to keep them from getting stale, and we think we’ve got the right mix to welcome the holidays downtown.”
Parade replaced by indoor programming
In addition to the new date, the partnership is reshaping the festival’s format. The traditional parade that once traveled down Main Street after the tree lighting has been discontinued. Instead, The Dayton Arcade will host a suite of indoor programming, joining Courthouse Square as a central hub for holiday activities.
Festival-goers can expect children’s crafts, live music, a photo booth, a display of Gingerbread House Contest entries, and shopping and dining options in the North Arcade. The Arcade’s indoor setting aims to provide a comfortable, weather‑proof environment for families while still celebrating the community spirit that the festival embodies.
Free events continue
Most of the festival’s events remain free of charge, honoring the original mission set by Mrs. Virginia Kettering to ensure access for all children regardless of financial means. The Dec. 4 kickoff launches a month‑long series of downtown activities, including a Family Movie Series at THE NEON, photos with Santa at The Dayton Arcade, the Whimsical Windows decorating contest, an Elf Hunt, and “Deck the Diamond” at Day Air Ballpark.
How to participate
Visitors can find an online calendar of events, dining guides, and parking maps on the Dayton Holiday Festival website. The partnership encourages residents to plan ahead, especially those traveling for Thanksgiving, to take full advantage of the new schedule and indoor offerings.
Community impact
By adjusting the festival’s timing and format, the Downtown Dayton Partnership hopes to sustain a beloved holiday tradition while adapting to modern family schedules and weather considerations. The changes reflect a commitment to keeping downtown Dayton vibrant, family‑friendly, and accessible for years to come.
