Philpot, Ky. – Deputies with the Daviess County Sheriff’s Office, Kentucky State Police and local fire departments responded to a standoff Tuesday evening after 37‑year‑old Kyle Smith refused to surrender on an arrest warrant. The incident unfolded on Old Highway 54 around 6:50 p.m., when officers found Smith inside a pole‑barn‑style residence armed with a long gun.
Negotiations and gunfire
Negotiators attempted to communicate with Smith while the Kentucky State Police SWAT team was dispatched to the scene. After roughly three hours of talks, Smith fired a 12‑gauge shotgun from inside the building, striking deputies who were positioned outside.
Fleeing the scene
Following the gunfire, Smith drove a Nissan Maxima through a closed garage door, striking a parked truck he owned and a Daviess County Sheriff’s Office vehicle before speeding onto Old Highway 54. Deputies and troopers pursued him along Highway 54 and Highway 142, reaching speeds near 100 mph. The chase ended when Smith lost control of the vehicle and crashed.
Arrest and charges
Smith was taken into custody and transported to a local hospital for evaluation. Once released, he will be booked into the Daviess County Detention Center on twelve counts of first‑degree wanton endangerment, two counts of first‑degree criminal mischief, one count of second‑degree criminal mischief, and one count of first‑degree fleeing or evading law enforcement. No other injuries were reported.
Sheriff’s statement
Sheriff Brad Youngman praised the coordinated response, saying, “We are very fortunate that no one was injured or killed by the dangerous manner in which this suspect chose to deal with a lawful warrant for his arrest. I am grateful for the way my deputies, KSP troopers and firefighters handled the situation. It is because of their efforts that no one was injured.”
The Daviess County Sheriff’s Office indicated the investigation remains ongoing and additional charges may be filed as more information becomes available.
