Dallas City Council Considers Cutting $1.5 Million from Flock Safety Camera Program

Dallas officials are weighing the future of the city’s license‑plate‑reading camera network after Councilmember Adam Bazaldua announced a proposal to pull $1.5 million from next year’s budget. The cameras, installed at 670 stationary locations under a $5.7 million contract with Flock Safety, have been praised by police for aiding investigations but face growing scrutiny.

Councilmember pushes for a pause

Bazaldua told the council that the technology “hasn’t yet been vetted to the level that we would like,” and urged a “pump the brakes” approach. He plans to introduce an amendment on Wednesday that would effectively terminate the contract by removing the earmarked funds.

State funding withdrawn

The move comes after Governor Greg Abbott ordered state agencies to stop funding Flock cameras, adding pressure on local budgets. Without state support, Bazaldua asked, “Is this a sustainable program, anyway?”

Police say cameras help solve crimes

Dallas Police Chief Daniel Comeaux defended the system, noting that it has contributed to solving 13 % of business robbery cases and 12 homicides this year. “It’s one that has helped solve crimes throughout Dallas – and it will continue to help solve crimes throughout Dallas,” he said.

Uncertainty over future guidance

A police spokesperson said the department is awaiting official guidance on how the loss of state funds will affect existing grant money, already‑purchased equipment, and future expenditures. The spokesperson added that the impact cannot be fully assessed until state direction is clarified.

Flock Safety’s response

Flock Safety emphasized its commitment to “thoughtful legislation and strong privacy, transparency, and accountability guardrails,” asserting that the technology can be used responsibly while keeping communities safe.

The council’s decision will shape whether Dallas continues to rely on this surveillance tool or seeks alternative methods for public‑safety investigations.
