Rockford, Ill. – The fourth annual Curt Schiavo Memorial bowling tournament is set for Oct. 17 at Don Carter Lanes, bringing together more than a hundred bowlers to raise money for youth scholarships. Tournament director Eric Sundberg said the event honors the late Curt Schiavo, a Greater Rockford Area Bowling Hall of Fame member who passed away in April 2023 after a diagnosis of mast cell sarcoma.
“I didn’t have the opportunities that we’re giving some of these kids when I was growing up,” Sundberg explained. “Anything I can do to give back to the youth to help them with their athletic or academic career, then I’m all for it.”
Since its inception, the tournament has awarded 30 scholarships to high‑school seniors who meet the program’s criteria. This year, the event is fully booked with 114 registered bowlers and a waiting list, underscoring strong community support. Spectators are welcome, and additional donations will be accepted on‑site.
The evening kicks off at 7:30 p.m. and is expected to run past midnight. About 15 volunteers will help run the lanes, ensuring a smooth experience for participants and guests alike. All proceeds go directly to the scholarship fund, which supports students in both athletic and academic pursuits.
Community Impact
Beyond the competition, the tournament serves as a gathering point for families, friends, and local businesses. It highlights the Rockford community’s commitment to nurturing the next generation, especially in a sport that promotes discipline, teamwork, and healthy recreation.
Local businesses have shown enthusiasm for the event, with many offering sponsorships and in‑kind donations. These contributions help stretch the scholarship fund further, allowing more students to benefit from the financial assistance.
How to Get Involved
Anyone interested in supporting the tournament can attend as a spectator, make a donation at the venue, or volunteer for future events. Sundberg noted that the tournament’s success relies heavily on community involvement, and he encourages residents to spread the word.
