Chicago commuters should prepare for continued interruptions on the CTA’s Green and Pink Lines this week, officials announced on Tuesday. The Chicago Department of Transportation (CDOT) and the Chicago Transit Authority (CTA) said the disruptions, which began on Oct. 13, have been pushed back again, with no firm date yet for a return to normal service.
Why the lines are down
The Lake Street Bridge, which carries both the Green and Pink Lines into the Loop, is undergoing a major reconstruction. The bridge has been closed to vehicles and pedestrians for the past year, and the rebuild is now projected to continue through January 2028. Because the bridge is a critical link for the two lines, CTA has been forced to suspend service on the affected segments.
Current service adjustments
Green Line trains will still run in two separate sections: between Harlem/Lake and Clinton, and between Clark/Lake and the South Side terminals. To bridge the gap between Clinton and Clark/Lake, shuttle buses will run frequently, allowing riders to transfer between the two operating segments.
Pink Line service is also limited. Trains will operate between 54th/Cermak and the Racine station on the Blue Line. Riders can transfer at Racine to reach downtown destinations via the Blue Line.
What’s next
CTA and CDOT said they will issue a specific date and time for full service restoration once the schedule is confirmed. In addition, a second two‑week outage for both lines is planned for the spring, tied to ongoing work on the Lake Street Bridge.
How commuters can plan
Riders are encouraged to check the CTA website or mobile app for real‑time updates, including shuttle bus routes and any additional service changes. The agency also recommends allowing extra travel time and considering alternative routes, such as the Red, Blue or Orange Lines, when possible.
While the extended construction timeline is inconvenient, officials stress that the bridge rebuild is essential for long‑term reliability and safety of the city’s rapid‑transit network. The project aims to modernize the structure, improve capacity, and reduce future maintenance disruptions.
Community members who rely on the Green and Pink Lines for work, school, or family obligations are urged to stay informed and reach out to CTA customer service with any concerns about accessibility or service gaps.
