Virginia Beach – After more than three months on the road, local cyclist Pat McAleer celebrated the successful conclusion of his cross‑country ride, having surpassed his fundraising target for type 1 diabetes research.
From the Pacific Northwest to the Atlantic Coast
McAleer set out on July 17 from La Push, Washington, a small community on the Pacific Ocean. He pedaled eastward across the United States, stopping in towns and cities along the way to speak with families affected by type 1 diabetes. The journey culminated in the Virginia Beach area, where he announced that he had raised more than $250,000 for Breakthrough T1D, the nonprofit organization dedicated to accelerating a cure.
Personal motivation fuels the mission
The effort was deeply personal. McAleer’s daughter, Mary Kate, was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes in 2009. “Seeing the daily challenges my daughter faces inspired me to take on this ride,” he said. “I wanted to give back and help other families who are fighting the same battle.”
Community support along the route
Throughout the trek, McAleer met with patients, caregivers, and local volunteers who shared their stories and helped spread awareness. Those conversations reinforced the urgency of funding research that could one day eliminate the disease.
Local businesses and individual donors contributed generously, and several Virginia‑based organizations hosted fundraising events that added to the total. The momentum built as the ride progressed, culminating in a final push that pushed the tally past the original $250,000 goal.
Fundraising continues
Although the target has been met, McAleer emphasized that donations are still welcome. “Every additional dollar brings us closer to a cure,” he explained. “We encourage anyone who can give, whether it’s a small contribution or a larger pledge, to support Breakthrough T1D.”
Breakthrough T1D plans to allocate the funds toward cutting‑edge research, clinical trials, and educational programs for families living with the disease. The organization praised McAleer’s dedication, noting that his effort not only raised money but also heightened public understanding of type 1 diabetes.
Looking ahead
McAleer hopes the ride will inspire others to undertake similar challenges for charitable causes. He also intends to remain active in the diabetes community, speaking at future events and continuing to advocate for increased research funding.
For those interested in contributing, the Breakthrough T1D donation portal remains open, and updates on the impact of the funds will be posted on the organization’s website.
