Crook Farm’s Apple Harvest Weekend Is Worth Planning Around

Crook Farm holds its Apple Harvest Weekend every October on the same 1840s farmstead off Route 346, and if you haven’t made it out there yet, it’s worth putting on the calendar before the date sneaks up on you.

The farm sits a few miles east of downtown Bradford, past the edge of town where the houses thin out and the hills take over. The drive alone — Route 346 winding through hardwood forest in full color — sets the mood before you even park. Admission runs around five dollars for adults; kids usually get in free or close to it, and the price hasn’t moved much in years, which is part of why locals keep coming back.

Once you’re on the grounds, the first thing to do is find the cider press. They run it throughout the weekend, and you can watch the whole process — apples go in, fresh cider comes out — before buying a jug to take home. It’s not pasteurized, so it won’t last forever, but it’s the real thing and tastes like it. Plan on buying more than one jug. You’ll wish you had.

The farm also sells seasonal produce — squash, gourds, pumpkins — along with jams and baked goods made by local vendors. The apple pies are reliable. The apple butter tends to sell out by early afternoon on Saturday, so if that’s your target, get there when the gates open rather than drifting in after lunch.

Activities lean toward families: wagon rides around the property, hayrides out to the fields, and a few hands-on stations where younger kids can try things like corn grinding or old-fashioned tools. It’s not elaborate, but it’s well-run and genuinely grounded in what the farm actually is — a working agricultural property with a real history, not a themed experience grafted onto empty land.

The Bradford Landmark Society oversees Crook Farm, which means the weekend also has a mild educational thread running through it. Volunteers in period dress staff some of the outbuildings and are happy to talk about farm life in the mid-1800s. You can engage with that or not — nobody pushes it on you — but if you’ve got curious kids or any interest in local history, it adds something.

Weather is the main variable. October in McKean County can go either way: a gorgeous 60-degree Saturday or a cold rain that cuts attendance in half. Dress in layers regardless, and check the Bradford-area forecast the morning of. The event runs rain or shine, but mud and cold change the calculus on how long you’ll want to stay.

Parking is in an adjacent field. It fills up midday on Saturday, which is the busiest stretch, so aim for before noon or late afternoon. Sunday tends to be quieter and a bit more relaxed if you’re not chasing the apple butter.

If you’ve never been, the core appeal is simple: it’s a genuinely local event on a genuinely old farm in fall foliage country, and it doesn’t try to be more than that. That restraint is exactly what makes it worth the trip.
