Cowboys Give George Pickens Full Practice, Position Him for Early Role vs. Eagles

Dallas – In a clear signal of intent, Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott upgraded wide receiver George Pickens from limited participation on Thursday to a full practice session on Friday. While the move does not lock in Pickens’ exact workload for Monday night’s showdown with the Philadelphia Eagles, it does make the quarterback’s desire to feature the young talent earlier in the offense more concrete.

Prescott’s emphasis on early usage

Prescott told reporters that the focus is on urgency, cleaner communication on hot reads, and better protection adjustments. He also highlighted the need to establish a stronger running game with backs Javonte Williams and Tyler Goodson. Pickens fits into that plan as an early‑down option, not merely a late‑game contingency.

Why an early look matters

The Cowboys have scored 29 points in each of their last two games, both losses, while averaging just 76 rushing yards per game – a figure that ranks 31st in the NFL. An early completion to Pickens won’t solve the rushing woes on its own, but it forces the Eagles to respect the outside of the formation, preventing the Cowboys from becoming trapped in predictable passing situations.

Prescott can deploy Pickens without a pre‑set route or target quota. If Philadelphia shows favorable coverage, the quarterback can simply throw. Should the Eagles double‑team Pickens, another receiver or the running game will gain space, keeping the defense honest before the play reaches third‑and‑long.

Balancing the run and the pass

Even with Pickens in the mix, Dallas can continue to lean on Williams and Goodson. A defense that must account for Pickens’ alignment cannot ignore the running backs, allowing the Cowboys to pursue a more balanced attack. An early look, whether it results in a catch or merely draws defensive attention, can coexist with a renewed focus on the ground game.

Philadelphia’s defensive tendencies

The Eagles have deployed four or fewer pass rushers on 75.9% of their snaps, one of the highest rates in the league. This often leaves extra defenders in coverage, creating opportunities for receivers who line up on the outside. Any early Pickens opportunity will still need to survive the leverage, coverage reads, and Prescott’s post‑snap decision‑making.

What’s next

Saturday’s final practice remains, and the Cowboys will continue to fine‑tune the timing and routes for Pickens. The ultimate goal is to give Prescott a reliable early‑down weapon that can stretch the field, open lanes for the running backs, and keep the Eagles’ defense guessing.

For Dallas fans, the full practice is a promising sign that the team is actively addressing its offensive shortcomings and looking to give the young receiver a meaningful role in the upcoming contest.
