Corsair’s Old Corner Belongs to Prince’s Hot Chicken Now

The scrambled eggs at Cafe Roze arrive in a shallow bowl, soft and just barely set, with a drizzle of something herby over the top. It sounds simple. It tastes like someone actually thought about it. That’s the whole deal here, and it’s been the whole deal since Amanda Mlean opened this spot on Eastland Avenue in 2017.

Cafe Roze sits in East Nashville, a few blocks off the busier stretches of Five Points, in a building that used to be a tire shop. The bones are still industrial — high ceilings, concrete floors — but the room is warm in a way that doesn’t feel designed to look warm. Pale pink walls, good light in the morning, mismatched ceramics on the tables. It’s the kind of place where regulars sit for an hour without feeling rushed, and where you can actually hear the person across from you.

The menu runs breakfast and lunch, with a short dinner service a few nights a week. Everything leans toward produce-forward without making a point of it. The grain bowls change with the season, and the kitchen clearly puts care into what goes in them — roasted vegetables that haven’t been overdone, grains with actual texture, dressings that pull it together rather than bury it. The avocado toast exists and is fine, but order it if you want, not out of obligation. The better move is usually whatever bowl or plate has something unfamiliar in the description.

Coffee is serious here. They source thoughtfully and the baristas know what they’re doing. A cortado at Cafe Roze is worth sitting down for, not just grabbing on your way out.

Brunch on weekends draws a crowd, and the wait can stretch past thirty minutes. The best time to visit is a weekday morning, when the room is maybe half full and the pace is easier. Lunch is also good and often less busy than people expect — the salads and grain bowls hold up well into the afternoon.

Prices are on the higher end for breakfast, which is worth knowing going in. Most bowls and plates run $14–$18. For Nashville, it’s not outrageous, but it’s also not a cheap Tuesday diner. You’re paying for sourcing and care, and if that’s not what you’re after on a given day, there’s no shame in that.

What makes Cafe Roze worth returning to is harder to name than the food itself. Part of it is that nothing feels like a trend that got pinned to a menu. The dishes are straightforward without being boring. The room is pleasant without being precious. The staff tends to be genuinely helpful rather than performatively warm. It has regulars because it earns them, not because it positioned itself to have them.

If you’re coming in from out of town, it’s an honest picture of what a certain kind of East Nashville daily life looks like — people working on laptops, people meeting friends, people eating alone with a book. Nothing exceptional is happening. That’s exactly the point.
