Hooks, Texas – The Hooks Hornets continued their dominant start to the season, with running back Corbin Edwards earning the Texarkana Gazette’s Player of the Week honor for his outstanding performance against the Redwater Dragons.
Edwards carried the ball 23 times and amassed a staggering 305 rushing yards, finding the end zone six times. His effort was the key factor in the Hornets’ 76‑60 win, a result that solidified Hooks’ position as the top seed in District 9‑3A Division II.
Season‑long excellence
The Hornets have already collected three Player of the Week awards this year. Edwards shared the first honor with teammate Kavon Stiger after an 89‑point season opener, and Stiger earned a solo award after the team posted 70 points against Daingerfield. This week, Edwards stood alone as the Gazette’s top performer.
Earlier in the season, Edwards demonstrated his versatility with a 300‑yard rushing effort and five touchdowns, a performance that earned him a co‑award with Stiger. The latest game against Redwater showed that the position change Coach Todd Ledford requested earlier in the year is paying dividends.
Coach’s perspective
“It’s one of those deals where he had to change positions,” Head Coach Todd Ledford told the Gazette. “I asked him to step out of his comfort zone and do something he hadn’t done before in high school football.” The coach’s gamble appears to have paid off, as Edwards’ numbers this season are among the most impressive in the district.
Edwards’ ability to dominate both on the ground and in the scoring column has been a catalyst for Hooks’ offensive success. The Hornets have posted scores of 89, 70 and 76 points in their first three games, a testament to a balanced attack that blends strong rushing with efficient passing.
Redwater’s bright spot
Redwater quarterback Braelan Morgan also delivered a noteworthy performance, throwing for 318 yards and two touchdowns while adding 117 rushing yards and three scores on the ground. Morgan’s effort kept the Dragons competitive and positions Redwater for a potential playoff berth.
“Morgan’s dual‑threat ability gave us a chance to stay in the game,” said Redwater coach after the contest. “We’ll build on this performance as we head toward the postseason.”
Both teams will look to continue their momentum as the regular season progresses. Hooks aims to maintain its top‑seed status, while Redwater seeks to secure a playoff spot with the win behind them.
The Gazette will continue to spotlight outstanding individual achievements throughout the district’s high‑school football season.
