Palatine resident Alexandros Paporakis, 19, was ordered by a Cook County judge on Wednesday to receive hormone injections for a pediatric gender transition while he remains in custody awaiting trial. The order also includes treatment for ADHD, depression and anxiety, according to a jail healthcare directive cited by NBC Chicago.
Charges and alleged plot
Paporakis faces a Class X felony charge of making a terrorist threat and a Class 3 felony charge of unlawfully possessing a rifle with a barrel shorter than 16 inches. Prosecutors say he plotted a mass shooting at a Hindu temple outside Chicago, targeting people of Indian ancestry, as well as Jewish and Black individuals. An eight‑page document attributed to him reportedly outlines white‑supremacist and neo‑Nazi beliefs and detailed plans for the attack.
Police say the suspect was arrested on Sunday after a coworker reported alarming communications. The coworker, who worked with Paporakis at a Taco Bell in Arlington Heights, told investigators that Paporakis claimed his rifle had jammed and that he could “retry when I fix this.” Surveillance footage captured a red Acura RDX registered to Paporakis entering the temple’s parking lot at about 12:25 p.m. on Oct. 11.
Evidence recovered
Investigators recovered an AR‑style rifle without a serial number, loaded magazines, 300 rounds of ammunition, a tactical vest and Nazi‑themed imagery from Paporakis’s residence. Police have not confirmed whether the rifle actually jammed or where a potential shooting attempt might have taken place.
Palatine Police Chief William Nord emphasized the seriousness of the alleged threat, stating that the potential for violence “cannot be overstated.”
Legal process and next steps
Paporakis’s public defender cautioned that the police and prosecution accounts remain allegations and could evolve as the investigation proceeds. The defendant is scheduled to appear in court again on Oct. 30 at 9 a.m. in Rolling Meadows.
The case highlights ongoing concerns about extremist violence and the intersection of criminal justice with the provision of medical care to detainees. While the hormone treatment order is a routine healthcare measure for an inmate who has expressed a desire for gender transition, it has drawn attention amid the broader allegations of extremist plotting.
