Connecticut shoppers face higher Halloween candy costs as chocolate prices jump

Halloween is only weeks away, but families across Connecticut are already noticing a scary trend at the checkout: candy prices are climbing. Industry data shows chocolate prices have risen 15.5% this year, while the Bureau of Labor Statistics reports an 8% increase in overall candy and chewing‑gum costs over the past twelve months.

Local shoppers feel the pinch

“I love Halloween candy,” said Steven Turnbull of Bloomfield, who noted that a 35‑piece pack of Snickers now costs over $10. “Even just for myself, a pack of 35 Snickers or whatever is over $10 now,” he added.

Daniel Marcial of East Hartford echoed the sentiment, describing the higher price tag as a “rough” decision for many families. “You walk into the store, and you’re like, ‘Am I really spending that much on a bag of candy?’” he said.

National spending outlook

The National Retail Federation estimates the average American will spend about $115 on Halloween treats this year. While that figure reflects a national average, Connecticut shoppers are seeing local price spikes that could push personal budgets higher.

Where to find the best value

To help consumers stretch their dollars, NBC Connecticut compared bulk chocolate candy prices at four major retailers. Costco emerged as the most economical option, offering 90 ounces of assorted chocolate for $23.99. Walmart, Target, and Stop & Shop all posted higher per‑ounce costs.

For families looking to save, the outlet suggests comparing bulk prices, watching for sales, and considering store‑brand alternatives where available.

Why chocolate costs are soaring

Analysts attribute the sharp rise in chocolate prices to extreme weather events that have disrupted cocoa production in West Africa, a key source of the world’s cocoa supply. The reduced harvest has tightened global supplies, driving up wholesale costs that ultimately reach the consumer.

Tradition endures despite price hikes

Even with higher costs, many Connecticut residents say the holiday’s nostalgic appeal outweighs the expense. “We usually buy candy, at least a bag at the house just in case,” said Samantha Gill of East Hartford. Turnbull added that Halloween helps people reconnect with their “inner child,” underscoring the cultural importance of the celebration.

While the price increase may cause a “whoa moment” for some shoppers, the consensus remains that the tradition is worth preserving. By seeking out the best deals and planning purchases ahead of time, families can continue to enjoy the sweet rituals of Halloween without breaking the bank.
