During its regular meeting on Oct. 22, the Comal ISD board of trustees voted unanimously to name the district’s new Life Bridges campus the Dan Krueger Building. The decision honors the former board president, who served from 1994 to 2009 and led the board for eight years.
Krueger’s legacy in the community
In a video presented at the meeting, former New Braunfels Mayor Rusty Brockman praised Krueger as a “good neighbor, friend, family man and Christian” who has “performed in many, many ways to improve the community” and possesses a “servant leader’s heart.” Superintendent John E. Chapman III, speaking on behalf of former Superintendent Jerry Major, added, “I was only as good as Dan Krueger. The work that he did, and how he supported me, and the love that he has for humans, the love for our community, and ultimately the sacrifice he gives each and every day.”
Life Bridges program
Life Bridges is an educational program that helps young adults with disabilities ages 18‑22 transition from school to adult life. The new campus will feature hands‑on learning spaces and apartment‑style suites designed to teach daily‑living skills. The facility is part of Proposition A, the district’s 2023 voter‑approved bond that allocated $560.56 million for new schools, security upgrades and facility maintenance.
Community support and next steps
The Comal Forward Committee, a 60‑person group of parents and community members, recommended the project in the fall of 2022. Construction began in September 2025, and the building is expected to open in the near future.
Krueger expressed humility about the naming honor, saying, “It’s such a profound honor to have the facility named after me, but the real story here is the Life Bridges program itself. Seeing the impact we’ve been able to have on our students and watching them grow has been the highlight of my time on the board. It’s a wonderful program, and I’m just lucky to be a small part of it.”
Krueger’s broader contributions
Beyond his service on the board, Krueger founded the Comal Education Foundation in 2001, a nonprofit that raises funds to support district students and teachers. He also serves as an Opa at Wurstfest, helping organize and run the annual festival that celebrates the region’s German heritage.
The naming of the Dan Krueger Building underscores the district’s commitment to honoring those who have dedicated their lives to public service and to providing vital resources for students with disabilities as they prepare for independent adulthood.
