Cleveland Residents Turn Out Early as Gas and Food Costs Drive Voter Engagement

At a weekly workshop in Cleveland’s Central neighborhood, Morgan “Mo” Lewis, coordinator of the nonpartisan Vote Squad, asked a room of about two dozen residents how they felt about the upcoming November 3 midterm election. The response was immediate: “I already voted.”

Grassroots Canvassing Boosts Early Voting

Lewis and her volunteers have spent weeks walking the streets of Central, knocking on doors and speaking at community gatherings. Their goal is simple: connect everyday concerns—especially the rising cost of gasoline, shrinking food assistance, and upcoming Medicaid work‑requirement changes—to the ballot box.

“There is still rhetoric that our vote does not matter,” Lewis said. “We have to meet people where they are and show that voting can bring real improvement for families.”

Early‑In‑Person Ballots Surge

As of October 26, Cleveland voters have cast 8,765 early‑in‑person ballots, roughly 2,500 more than the final early‑vote total in the 2022 midterms. Cuyahoga County as a whole reports 32,095 early ballots, up from 19,918 in 2022. Ward 5, which includes Central, has seen its early‑vote count double in ten days, reaching 527 ballots—about 3.75% of registered voters, with six days left before Election Day.

Greater Cleveland Congregations, another faith‑based volunteer group, has also deployed canvassers across several neighborhoods and inner‑ring suburbs. Senior organizer Khalilah Worley Billy notes that volunteers are hearing more voters say they intend to vote than ever before.

Voters Cite Economic Pressure

Many residents tie their voting decisions directly to economic stress. Long‑time resident Tucker White, a Cleveland Heights homeowner, said his top concern is “greed.” He worries about cuts to Medicaid and the ability of seniors and families to afford gas and groceries.

Volunteers reported that even new parents feel the squeeze. One new mother, though employed with good benefits, said she feels pressured to return to work quickly because she cannot afford additional childcare.

Local Organizations Combat Misinformation

The Vote Squad is focusing on misinformation circulating online and in political ads, especially in the race for Ohio’s next governor. “People are getting distracted by mud‑slinging,” said Vote Squad member Ariana Menefee. “They need to see what’s really at stake for their families.”

Lewis added that younger residents are turning political ads into jokes and memes, a sign that they are engaging critically with the messages they receive.

Historical Turnout Context

In the 2022 midterms, only about 15% of registered voters in Central cast ballots, compared with a citywide turnout of roughly 31%. This election shows a clear upward trend, suggesting that community‑based outreach is making a difference.

As volunteers continue to knock on doors—over 300 in Cleveland Heights alone, with 71 residents answering and 57 committing to vote—the message is clear: when families see that their daily struggles are reflected in the issues on the ballot, they are more likely to participate.

What Voters Can Do Next

Residents are encouraged to locate their polling place on the Cuyahoga County Board of Elections website and to bring a valid ID to the ballot box. With early voting still open, the momentum built by local volunteers could translate into a decisive turnout on Election Day.
