Clearwater’s Capitol Theatre Earns Its Marquee

The Capitol Theatre in downtown Clearwater opened in 1921, which means it has outlasted most of the things that once surrounded it and several renovation trends that probably should have finished it off.

First reason to go: the room itself. The Capitol seats around 2,000 people and manages to feel neither cavernous nor cramped, which is a trick most venues its age have long since fumbled. The sightlines are good from nearly everywhere on the floor, the balcony is legitimately worth climbing to, and the acoustics don’t punish you for standing in the wrong spot. Ruth Eckerd Hall gets most of the press in Pinellas County for mid-size concerts, and that’s fine — but the Capitol has a personality Ruth Eckerd doesn’t, the kind you notice immediately in the ornate plasterwork above the stage and the lobby that feels like it expects you to dress slightly better than you did.

Second reason: the programming is genuinely eclectic without trying to be. A recent stretch included a Moody Blues tribute act, a touring comedian, a bluegrass outfit from Asheville, and a screening of a classic film with live organ accompaniment. That’s not a festival lineup; that’s just a few weeks on the calendar. The Capitol books the kind of acts that fill 1,500-seat rooms across the country without ever landing on a playlist algorithm — which means if you check the schedule every month or two, you’ll probably find something you didn’t know you wanted to see.

Third reason, and this one is practical: Clearwater’s downtown has gotten easier to spend an evening in. Cleveland Street has restaurants worth eating at before a show — Cerdito does solid Cuban-influenced small plates a short walk away, and there are a few bars that won’t make you feel terrible about being there. Parking is not the nightmare people expect. The Capitol itself is at 405 Cleveland Street, which puts it close enough to the waterfront that a walk after the show is an actual option, not just something a tourism brochure suggests.

Tickets run anywhere from about $25 for a local act to north of $100 for something with a name you’d recognize. The Capitol’s website handles ticketing directly, and service fees are present but not outrageous by current standards, which puts it in the top percentile of large venues on that particular metric alone.

What the Capitol doesn’t do is manufacture an atmosphere. The building is old enough that it doesn’t have to. The staff tends to be knowledgeable and unhurried, the bar in the lobby pours without making you feel processed, and the whole experience has a low-key civic pride to it — the kind of place locals bring out-of-town friends to prove that Clearwater is not just the beach and the scientologists.

It’s been renovated more than once, most recently in 2004 under Ruth Eckerd Hall’s management, and those renovations respected what was already there instead of erasing it. That restraint is rarer than it should be.
