Clark County officials cite staffing and early voting as keys to handling 2026 midterm turnout

Clark County, Nevada – The county’s 2026 midterm election saw more than 1.5 million registered voters head to the polls, and while a handful of locations experienced extended wait times, officials stress that the overall operation was well‑staffed and equipped.

Two‑card ballot adds time at the machine

Registrar of Voters Lorena Portillo explained that the 2026 ballot required voters to use a two‑card format covering 142 contests and 254 candidates. “Voters did have to vote a two‑card ballot, and so they had more to scroll through, and so they had a little more time at the voting machine,” Portillo said. The added complexity naturally lengthened the time each voter spent at the booth.

Early voting and mail‑in ballots helped absorb demand

More than 378,000 mail‑in ballots were processed, and over 220,000 Nevadans cast their votes during the two‑week early‑voting window. On Election Day itself, approximately 156,000 voters turned in paper ballots in person. Portillo highlighted the county’s resources: “We have over 2,300 poll pads, and we have over 5,000 machines,” she noted, indicating that the hardware capacity matched the turnout.

Former registrar points to new voting system

Former Registrar Joseph Gloria agreed that the county was prepared, but he cautioned that the introduction of a new ballot‑marking device system can create short‑term challenges. “Anytime that you implement a new system, there are going to be challenges,” Gloria said. He also mentioned the power demands of the new equipment as an additional factor for poll sites.

Voter preparation emphasized

Both Portillo and Gloria urged voters to take advantage of early voting and to review sample ballots before heading to the polls. Gloria said, “It is important that voters in any election, but in this election you need to be familiar with the ballot… Voters need to become smarter about their choices.” Portillo added that the office continuously reviews election data and voter feedback to improve future cycles, stating, “We always think of ways to improve every election cycle. It teaches us so much about not only how to improve our process, but how to improve the voter experience.”

Looking ahead

As the county reviews the 2026 results, officials plan to refine training, expand early‑voting outreach, and ensure that polling locations remain fully staffed. The goal is to reduce wait times while preserving the integrity of a ballot that offers Nevadans a broad range of choices.

Clark County’s experience underscores the importance of preparation, both by election officials and by voters themselves, as the state continues to handle some of the nation’s largest voter populations.
