Chili Night at SStrange Brewing Has Its Own Logic

Srange Brewing Company on West Locust Street does not try to be everything. It’s a neighborhood taproom with a small but deliberate tap list, a low-key patio, and a kitchen that takes bar food more seriously than it has to. That last part is what keeps regulars coming back on weeknights when there’s no particular reason to go anywhere.

The building is a converted space in Davenport’s west side — no river view, no manufactured industrial chic, just a comfortable room with good lighting and the kind of bar where the person next to you might be a college professor or a plumber and it doesn’t matter either way. The vibe is resolutely un-curated, which is a thing that is increasingly hard to find.

On the beer side, Srange leans toward approachable craft: a rotating selection of IPAs, some solid lagers, the occasional seasonal that actually tastes like the season it’s named after rather than a candle. Nothing here is trying to stump you. The pour prices are honest — expect to spend somewhere in the $5–$7 range per pint, which in 2024 almost qualifies as a civic service.

But the food is the real story, specifically the chili, which shows up on the menu in colder months and has quietly developed a following. It’s a thicker, richer style — not Texas, not Cincinnati, something in between — served with cornbread that is inexplicably good for a taproom. Order it. Don’t overthink it. The rest of the menu covers burgers and sandwiches competently, with a couple of vegetarian options that don’t feel like afterthoughts, which is rarer than it should be.

The patio is worth noting in summer. It’s not large, but it faces away from the street noise and has enough shade in the late afternoon that you can sit outside without feeling like you’re being slowly cooked. Davenport summers are humid and persuasive, and this patio handles them with minimal complaint.

Srange tends to draw the neighborhood crowd rather than a destination crowd, which means weeknights are genuinely calm. No trivia night chaos, no DJ who thinks the volume knob only goes in one direction. If you go on a Friday, it gets livelier but never crosses into a place where you have to lean in to hear the person across from you. That’s a distinction worth making.

Service is consistent. The staff knows the beer list and will give you a straight answer if you ask for a recommendation rather than reciting a scripted tasting note. That’s a small thing that matters more than most brewery marketing departments seem to understand.

It’s on West Locust, which puts it comfortably away from the riverfront bar scene if that’s a scene you’ve had enough of. Parking is easy. Hours run into the evening most nights. For a low-stakes Tuesday or a slow Sunday afternoon, Srange Brewing is the kind of place that earns your loyalty by simply being steady and not annoying you.
