Children’s Place to close Fort Payne distribution center, risking 593 jobs

Fort Payne, Ala. – The Children’s Place has issued a notice that its distribution center on Airport Road West will cease operations permanently on Jan. 5, 2027. The shutdown will affect all 593 employees at the facility, which has been a fixture in the community since opening in 2007.

Economic impact on DeKalb County

DeKalb County Economic Development Director Brett Johnson confirmed the legitimacy of the closure notice and described it as a “blow to the local economy,” especially as the region heads into the holiday shopping season. “We recognize the hardship this creates for families and the broader community,” Johnson said. “Our priority is to support these workers and help them transition to new employment opportunities within Fort Payne and across DeKalb County.”

Company cites financial difficulties

In a letter sent to staff, Children’s Place cited ongoing financial challenges as the reason for the decision. The company did not provide detailed financial data, but the statement indicated that the facility’s operating costs had become unsustainable. The closure will eliminate a significant source of stable, middle‑class wages in the area.

Local response and assistance efforts

County officials have pledged to mobilize resources to aid displaced workers. Johnson outlined several steps the county will take, including:

  • Coordinating with local employers to identify open positions that match the skill sets of former distribution center staff.
  • Offering resume workshops, interview preparation, and job‑search counseling through the DeKalb County Workforce Development Center.
  • Exploring potential retraining programs in logistics, manufacturing, and emerging sectors such as renewable energy.

These initiatives aim to mitigate the immediate loss of income and preserve the economic stability of Fort Payne families.

Community perspective

Residents expressed concern about the timing of the closure, noting that the holiday season typically brings a surge in retail activity and temporary employment. “We rely on the center not just for jobs but for the sense that our town is part of a larger supply chain,” said longtime employee Maria Lopez, who has worked at the facility for eight years. “Losing it feels like a setback for everyone who lives here.”

Local business leaders also highlighted the broader implications for ancillary services, such as trucking firms and local vendors that have historically supplied the distribution hub. “When a major employer like Children’s Place shuts down, the ripple effect touches many small businesses,” said Tom Harris, owner of a nearby freight brokerage.

Looking ahead

While the closure marks the end of an era for the Fort Payne facility, county officials remain optimistic that coordinated efforts will help the community rebound. “We have faced economic challenges before and emerged stronger,” Johnson affirmed. “With faith, hard work, and the support of our local partners, we will navigate this transition and continue to build a resilient economy for DeKalb County.”

Children’s Place has not announced any plans for relocation or alternative employment for the affected staff. The company’s corporate office will continue to operate its retail and e‑commerce functions from other locations nationwide.
