San Antonio – The Centro de Artes gallery, a free community‑focused art space in the heart of historic Market Square, marks a decade of showcasing contemporary Latino art with its new exhibition, Mercado/Material. Opening on October 16 and running through March 7, 2027, the show invites visitors to explore how Latinx communities shop, work, gather and create meaning in everyday market spaces.
Exhibition concept
Curated by local artist and educator Mia Lopez, Mercado/Material presents more than a dozen artists from Texas, Chicago and New York City. Through paintings, ceramic sculptures and installations, the works reimagine commercial goods and popular culture, challenging expectations and crafting new narratives that reflect the ongoing evolution of the market. “By reimagining commercial goods and drawing on popular culture, these artworks challenge expectations and craft new narratives that mirror the ongoing evolution of the mercado,” Lopez said.
Historical roots of the venue
The gallery’s building began life in 1922 as a Produce Market Annex, part of the commercial heritage of Market Square. Over the decades it transformed into a public gathering space, even housing the Smithsonian‑affiliated Museo Alameda before the City of San Antonio Department of Arts & Culture took over management in 2016. Today, Centro de Artes stands as a free, community‑centered venue dedicated to telling the story of the Latino experience in the United States, especially in South Texas.
Local relevance
Market Square has long been a bustling hub where people meet, trade, eat and celebrate cultural traditions. The exhibition asks visitors to consider how that commerce‑filled environment shapes the look, language and identity of Latino communities. The timing aligns with Fiestas Patrias and Hispanic Heritage Month, offering an added opportunity for residents and tourists alike to celebrate the cultural expressions that have long defined the district.
Impact and attendance
In its first decade under city management, Centro de Artes has presented 28 exhibitions featuring 3,180 artworks by 600 artists. The gallery welcomes more than 33,000 visitors each year, and its always‑free admission ensures that anyone strolling through Market Square can experience contemporary art without a ticket price. The venue also serves as a launchpad for emerging artists and curators, providing professional experience in a public setting.
