Cedar Street to the Finish: Running the Riverside Trail

My neighbor described it as the closest thing Hartford has to just disappearing for an hour. That’s about right. The Riverfront Recapture trail system along the Connecticut River — running roughly from Charter Oak Landing on the south end up through Great River Park on the north — is one of those places locals use constantly and somehow never talk about in the same breath as the city’s bigger attractions.

I started going regularly a few years back when I was between gym memberships and needed somewhere to move my legs without paying for it. The paved path hugs the river for a couple of miles each way, and on a clear morning the light off the water does something genuinely nice. You’re not fighting hills. There’s no admission. You just show up.

Charter Oak Landing, off Reserve Road near the South End, is where I usually put in. There’s parking, a boat launch, and a few picnic tables that see serious use on summer weekends. From there the trail runs north along the eastern bank, passing under the bridges that connect Hartford to East Hartford, and the whole thing feels slightly removed from the street noise even though you’re never far from it. That’s part of what makes it work — the river provides enough of a buffer that the city quiets down without you having to leave it.

The trail connects through to Great River Park on the East Hartford side via the pedestrian walkway across the Founders Bridge, which is worth doing at least once just for the views upstream. The full out-and-back from Charter Oak Landing to the northern end of Great River Park and back runs around four to five miles depending on where exactly you turn around. Easy enough for a casual walker, long enough to feel like a real outing if you push it.

What stands out, honestly, is how reliably maintained the path is. Riverfront Recapture, the nonprofit behind most of this, has kept it clean and navigable in a way that city-managed spaces don’t always manage. The lighting works. The signage is clear. Dogs are welcome on leash, and you’ll see plenty of them.

Best times to go: weekday mornings before ten, or weekend evenings when the light is long and the crowd thins out. Midday on a summer Saturday gets busy near the landing, but the northern stretches stay quieter. Fall is genuinely spectacular — the foliage along the bank, the lower angle of light, the cooler air off the water. I’ve done that walk in October more times than I can count.

Cost is zero, which in this city matters. Bring water if you’re going the full length; there are no vendors along the trail itself. The parking lot at Charter Oak Landing is free. If you’re coming from downtown, the bike lane on Main Street gets you to the river in about ten minutes.

It’s not a wilderness experience. You can see the highway, you can hear planes on approach to Bradley, and occasionally someone’s fishing spot blocks part of the bank. But for a mid-week reset, or a Sunday morning before the rest of your day claims you, it holds up every single time.
