Cave Creek School District investigates athletic director over alleged gun report handling

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. — Cave Creek Unified School District (CCUSD) disclosed that an ongoing Scottsdale Police investigation centers on the district’s athletic director, who is accused of not following established safety procedures after a report that a student may have brought a firearm onto the Cactus Shadows High School campus.

Timeline and procedural concerns

The incident occurred on Friday, September 11, shortly after 11:00 a.m. The student in question was not enrolled in CCUSD. According to Superintendent Nicole Regan, personnel who received the report did not initiate the standard response protocol, which includes securing the school and notifying law‑enforcement of an unlawful act.

Regan said the district is cooperating fully with Scottsdale Police and will continue to do so throughout the investigation. The police department has submitted the case involving the athletic director to the Scottsdale City Prosecutor’s Office for review of potential criminal charges related to the alleged failure to report.

District response and next steps

While the submission for review does not mean formal charges have been filed, CCUSD has taken corrective measures. Human Resources and the superintendent’s office are handling personnel matters confidentially, as required by law.

To address safety concerns, the district will conduct a comprehensive safety and vulnerability assessment of all campuses, with findings to be presented to the school board. Additional standard‑response protocol training is scheduled for this year.

Community reassurance

Regan emphasized that there is no current threat to students, staff, or the broader community. “The safety and well‑being of our students and staff remain our highest priority,” she wrote in a letter to families. The district plans to provide another update on October 30, once legally permissible.

Parents and community members are encouraged to stay informed through district communications. The district’s legal counsel has advised that further details cannot be released at this time due to the ongoing nature of the investigation and privacy protections for juveniles.

What this means for families

Families can expect continued transparency from CCUSD as the investigation proceeds. The district’s commitment to safety includes both immediate procedural reviews and longer‑term assessments aimed at preventing similar incidents.

For additional information, families may contact the district office or refer to the official statement posted on the CCUSD website.
