Café Sintra Brings Portuguese Soul to Downtown Bend

Café Sintra is a small Portuguese-inspired restaurant on Wall Street in downtown Bend, and it fills up fast on weekend evenings. That is worth knowing before you go.

The room seats maybe forty people, wood-paneled and warm, with a narrow bar along one wall where you can usually grab a spot without a reservation if you arrive before six. The lighting is low enough to feel intentional. There is no background noise fighting the conversation, which is rarer than it should be in downtown Bend these days.

The menu is short, which is a feature, not a limitation. It rotates with the season but typically centers on a handful of small plates — salt cod croquettes, a decent charcuterie board heavy on house-cured meats, and a rotating soup that leans on whatever’s coming out of Central Oregon farms that week. The arroz de marisco, a Portuguese seafood rice closer to a thick stew than a paella, shows up most nights and is the thing regulars tend to order. It arrives in a clay pot, deeply savory, and takes about twenty minutes. Order it when you sit down.

The wine list is short and tilts toward the Iberian Peninsula — Alentejo reds, Vinho Verde, and a few Spanish pours — with a handful of Oregon bottles for people who prefer to stay local. Glasses run ten to fifteen dollars. The house red, a Portuguese blend they keep on tap, goes for around nine and works well with almost everything on the menu.

Entrées land between eighteen and twenty-eight dollars. The portions are honest without being excessive. This is not the kind of place where you leave feeling like you wasted money, but it’s also not a bargain spot. Plan on spending around fifty per person with a drink or two.

What Café Sintra does well, beyond the food itself, is atmosphere — and that word gets overused, but here it actually means something. The staff knows the menu cold and will tell you directly if something is not worth ordering that night. That kind of candor builds trust fast. On a Tuesday in January, the place felt genuinely alive, not performatively busy, just full of people who seemed glad to be there.

Parking downtown is the usual Bend puzzle — the garage on Minnesota Avenue is a short walk and reliably has space. Reservations are available online and recommended Thursday through Saturday. If you’re coming mid-week or at lunch, walk-ins work fine.

The lunch service runs Tuesday through Friday and is considerably quieter, with a shorter menu built around sandwiches and soups. The bifanas — thin-sliced pork on a soft roll with mustard and piri-piri — are the move at lunch, and they come in around twelve dollars.

Bend’s restaurant scene trends heavily toward Pacific Northwest staples: game, elk, salmon, grain bowls. Café Sintra goes a different direction without making a fuss about it. The food just is what it is, and it’s good enough that you’ll probably think about the seafood rice on the drive home.
