Butterfield Canyon Trail Will Change How You Think About the Wasatch Foothills

There is a moment, about a mile into Butterfield Canyon Trail, when the suburban grid of West Jordan simply disappears behind you. The pavement, the strip malls, the school-zone signs — gone. What replaces them is a corridor of scrub oak and limestone ridgelines, the kind of landscape that reminds you how close Utah’s wild heart actually beats to everyday life. I have hiked this trail in every season, and every single time it delivers something I did not expect.

Butterfield Canyon sits tucked into the southern reaches of West Jordan, accessible off Butterfield Canyon Road near the community’s western edge. The trailhead has a small gravel parking area and a modest informational sign — nothing fancy, which is honestly part of the charm. This is a trail for people who prefer their nature unadorned and honest.

The route itself traces a canyon carved by a seasonal stream, climbing steadily through terrain that shifts from high desert scrub at the lower elevations to cooler, denser vegetation as you gain altitude. On a clear morning — and in Utah, clear mornings are mercifully common — the views back toward the Salt Lake Valley open up in a way that is genuinely breathtaking. You can see the entire valley floor spread out below, the Great Salt Lake shimmering silver in the distance, the downtown skyline a small cluster on the horizon. It reframes the city you live in or are visiting in a single glance.

Wildflowers make a strong showing from late April through June, with Indian paintbrush and yellow rabbitbrush coloring the trail margins. Deer are frequent enough that sightings have stopped surprising me, though they never stop delighting me. In autumn, the gambel oak turns a deep, burnished copper that rivals anything you would see in New England — full stop.

The trail accommodates a range of fitness levels. The lower canyon section is accessible for families with older children and casual hikers looking for a two-to-three mile out-and-back with moderate elevation gain. Those who want a serious workout can push farther up toward the canyon’s upper reaches, where the terrain steepens and the crowds thin to almost nothing. Bring plenty of water regardless of how far you plan to go; the canyon is exposed in stretches and Utah sun plays by its own rules.

What I appreciate most about Butterfield Canyon is the simplicity of what it offers. No admission fee, no reservation system, no curated experience. Just you, a well-maintained trail, and the undeniable fact that the Oquirrh Mountains are an underappreciated treasure sitting right on West Jordan’s doorstep. If you are spending any time in the area and have a spare morning, do not overthink it — lace up your shoes and go.
