Boston MBTA Commuter Rail delays blamed on fallen leaves, officials promise more cleaning

Boston commuters experienced a lengthy hold‑up on Tuesday when a MBTA Commuter Rail train stalled for roughly two hours on the route to Ruggles Station. Passengers reported sitting in a dark, stationary car before being instructed to walk along the tracks to reach the stop.

Leaves create a slippery film on the rails

Transit officials identified fallen leaves as the root cause of the mechanical issue. When leaves accumulate on the rails, they are crushed by passing trains and form a thin, oily film that reduces traction and makes braking difficult. The condition is especially common in the autumn months, when leaf drop is at its peak.

MBTA’s response and preventive measures

General Manager and CEO Phillip Eng emphasized that the agency is already employing a suite of cleaning tools to combat leaf‑related problems. “We run wash trains that pressure‑wash leaves off the rails, and we also deploy laser‑based cleaning trains that target stubborn buildup,” Eng said. “These efforts have been ongoing for years, and we’ll continue them throughout the season because each fall can vary—sometimes leaves fall early, sometimes late, so we must stay vigilant.”

Eng added that the MBTA plans to increase the frequency of both wash and laser trains as the season progresses, aiming to prevent future service interruptions. He noted that the agency monitors track conditions in real time and can dispatch additional cleaning equipment when needed.

Impact on riders and next steps

Riders who were stranded expressed frustration but also appreciation for the transparency of the MBTA’s explanation. One commuter told NBC10 Boston, “We were stuck for two hours, and then we had to walk along the tracks to get off. It was uncomfortable, but at least we now know why it happened.”

The agency is urging passengers to allow extra travel time during the fall and to stay informed through the MBTA’s service alerts. Eng reminded the public that the MBTA remains committed to maintaining safe and reliable service, and that ongoing maintenance work is a critical component of that commitment.

Why leaf‑related delays matter

While leaf buildup may seem minor, it can have a cascading effect on the entire commuter‑rail network, causing delays that ripple across multiple lines. By proactively cleaning the tracks, the MBTA seeks to protect the punctuality of its schedules and the safety of its riders.

Boston residents can expect the MBTA to continue its seasonal cleaning program throughout the autumn months, with the goal of minimizing further disruptions caused by nature’s seasonal changes.
