Bayview’s beloved “Bob’s Day” celebration is set for Friday, Nov. 6, from 3:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. at 950 Innes Ave. The event honors Bob Pinkard, the 81‑year‑old owner of Surfside Liquors, which has served the neighborhood since 1974.
Legacy award and community festivities
District 10 Supervisor Shamann Walton will present Pinkard with a Legacy Business award from the Office of Small Business’s Legacy Business Program, recognizing his 54‑year contribution to San Francisco’s small‑business landscape. After the ceremony, neighbors will gather for a block‑side barbecue, sharing stories and celebrating Pinkard’s impact.
“We’ve all been raised by Uncle Bob. He’s a legendary figure and a pillar in this community,” said event organizer Shaquille Cooper, owner of Bayview‑based clothing brand B4L, which is releasing Bob‑themed merchandise for the day.
Pinkard’s community legacy
Beyond running Surfside Liquors, Pinkard has long supported local residents. In 2006 he was named a community hero by the Chrissy Field Center for selling fresh produce in a food‑desert area. Cooper, a Bayview native who recently returned to the city, said the celebration grew organically after reconnecting with Pinkard and his family.
New businesses joining the corridor
While the community honors Pinkard, the Bayview corridor is buzzing with new openings. Phatwood Smokehouse Deli is set to replace a long‑empty beauty salon at 4928 Third St., with a grand opening expected in mid‑November. Chef Kimberlee White, who moved from Oakland, says the deli will serve smoked meat sandwiches, charcuterie, homemade soups, and handcrafted beverages.
Phatwood is one of nine businesses awarded Storefront Opportunity Grants earlier this year. All grantees are slated to open in the first quarter of 2027, adding vitality to Third Street’s growing commercial strip, which already features upcoming spots like Moya, Bayview Makers District Makeshop & Market, and Chapter 3.
Upcoming Bayview events
Bayview residents have more activities lined up: the Bayview/Linda Brooks‑Burton Library will host a Diwali craft session on Sat., Nov. 7, and All Good Pizza’s 14th annual Makers Market will run Sat., Nov. 14, featuring local vendors, live music, and a “Hot Glass Cold Beer” showcase.
Arts‑crafts nonprofit SCRAP, now in a larger two‑story space at 141 Industrial St., will hold its “Scraptacular” fundraiser on Sat., Nov. 14, with live music, food, a silent auction, and a capital‑campaign goal of $7.5 million. Tickets start at $100, with VIP options at $200.
These events underscore Bayview’s vibrant community spirit and the ongoing investment in local businesses that strengthen the neighborhood’s economic and cultural fabric.
