Billings law‑enforcement agencies were on scene Wednesday evening after a suspect fled a vehicle and entered a residence on the 1900 block of North Ninth Street, near North Park. Witnesses told MTN News the man ran into the house around 4:30 p.m. and later climbed out a second‑story window onto the roof.
Multi‑agency response
Billings police, the city’s SWAT team, Yellowstone County sheriff’s deputies, U.S. Marshals and Billings firefighters all converged on the address. Officers first attempted to subdue the suspect with non‑lethal bean‑bag rounds, which forced him back inside the home.
When the situation escalated, police deployed tear‑gas canisters. Shortly after, flames became visible from the exterior of the house. It remains unclear whether the tear‑gas canisters ignited the fire or if the suspect started it himself.
Firefighters gain control
Billings firefighters arrived promptly and worked to suppress the blaze. Their efforts succeeded in bringing the fire under control, preventing further damage to neighboring properties.
Authorities have asked residents to avoid the immediate area while the investigation continues and the scene is secured.
Ongoing investigation
The suspect’s identity and motive have not been released. Police have not indicated whether any injuries occurred during the standoff. The investigation remains active, and officials will release additional details as they become available.
