The Bennington Community Theatre announced a major milestone for the local arts scene: a permanent performance venue on the second floor of Nate’s Stumble Inn, a popular downtown restaurant and bar. The move, slated for January, will give the troupe a fixed address after months of hopping between churches, schools and other temporary locations.
From Vagabond to Home Base
Co‑founder and president Blake Thompson described the group’s previous situation as “a vagabond theatre,” noting that the company has performed in a variety of community spaces without a stable home. “Everybody asks all the time, ‘Where do you perform?’ or ‘Hey, where are you at?'” Thompson said.
Earlier this year the theatre secured a rehearsal space, which Thompson called a “milestone,” but the organization knew a true stage was still needed to realize its artistic vision.
Community Support and Vision
Performer and board member Chantel Wanek shared the long‑held goal of having a dedicated stage. “Eventually we would love to have a stage and a theatre so that we could really bring amazing productions to the community,” she told KMTV in April.
The new space will be “exclusively our space,” Thompson explained. A separate entrance has already been created, and signage will be installed. The theatre plans a modest, makeshift remodel to get the venue ready for performances while longer‑term improvements are considered.
Benefits for the Community
Having a permanent location will provide the Bennington Community Theatre with a clear identity and a reliable hub for programming. “The goal is to do most of our programming and rehearsing at the space, and it just gives us an identity, and it helps us continue to do more for the community,” Thompson said.
Local residents can look forward to a broader slate of productions, workshops and educational events that were previously limited by the lack of a dedicated stage. The theatre’s move also supports downtown Bennington’s revitalization efforts, drawing patrons to Nate’s Stumble Inn and surrounding businesses.
Looking Ahead
Construction and signage are expected to be completed before the January move. Once settled, the Bennington Community Theatre plans to expand its season, offering a mix of classic plays, contemporary works and community‑driven projects that reflect the values and traditions of the town.
City leaders have expressed enthusiasm for the development, noting that a thriving arts venue contributes to a vibrant, family‑friendly downtown and aligns with Bennington’s commitment to preserving cultural heritage while fostering new creative opportunities.
As the theatre prepares for its new home, volunteers and supporters are encouraged to attend upcoming fundraising events and help spread the word about the upcoming season. The transition promises to strengthen the bond between the arts and the broader Bennington community, ensuring that local families have access to quality theatrical experiences for years to come.
