In the wake of the tragic shooting at Silver Rail Elementary School, Bend-La Pine Schools is opening its doors to the community for two structured engagement sessions. The district says the meetings are intended to give students, staff, families and local residents a chance to voice concerns, ask questions and learn about the resources being made available.
Family‑focused session on November 4
On Wednesday, Nov. 4, the district will convene a smaller gathering specifically for the families and staff of Silver Rail Elementary. District officials will be on hand to listen, provide updates on safety measures and outline counseling services. The session is being held at the elementary school itself, with a limited capacity to ensure a supportive environment.
Broad community forum on November 5
The larger community meeting is scheduled for Thursday, Nov. 5, from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at Pilot Butte Middle School in Bend. Up to 400 attendees may join in person, and a live‑stream link will be available through the Silver Rail Community Information Hub for those who cannot attend physically. Spanish interpretation will be provided to ensure language access for all residents.
Representatives from the Bend Police Department, school‑board members and district leadership will field questions and share information about the ongoing investigation, security enhancements and mental‑health support. Facilitators from the National Mass Violence Center—an organization that assists victims and survivors of mass violence—will guide the conversation, helping participants navigate the emotional and practical aspects of recovery.
Deschutes County Behavioral Health Services will also be present to outline counseling options, crisis‑intervention resources and long‑term mental‑health programs for students and families affected by the tragedy.
Online survey for continued input
In addition to the in‑person sessions, Bend-La Pine Schools has launched an online community survey administered by the Donovan Group. The questionnaire allows anyone in the district to submit written questions, share feedback and suggest ideas for improving safety and support services. The survey will remain open through Nov. 9, giving the community ample time to contribute.
District Superintendent Dr. Michael H. McCarty emphasized the importance of transparent communication, stating, “Our priority is the well‑being of our students, staff and families. By listening directly to the community, we can make informed decisions that restore confidence and safety in our schools.”
The district’s proactive approach reflects a broader commitment to parental‑rights and community involvement, core values that many families in Central Oregon hold dear. By providing multiple avenues for engagement—both in‑person and online—Bend-La Pine Schools aims to foster a collaborative response that honors the memory of those lost while supporting the healing process for the entire community.
