Temperance, Mich. – Bedford High School senior Evan Gartee is making a name for himself in the classroom, on the court and in the community. While taking nine Advanced Placement courses, Gartee serves as class president and holds several leadership roles that reflect his commitment to faith, service and academic excellence.
Academic achievement and school leadership
Gartee’s AP load includes a rigorous mix of science, math and humanities courses, a challenge he says has taught him a strong work ethic and leadership skills. “I’d probably say just never really get discouraged,” he advised his freshman self. His AP teachers note that his performance sets a high standard for peers.
Scott Dennis, an AP government teacher with two decades at Bedford High, praised Gartee as “the best of the best.” Dennis added, “He’s so well‑rounded. He leads by example and makes everybody around him better.” The teacher said he had been waiting four years to have Gartee in his class, noting the student’s consistent dedication.
Faith‑based involvement
Beyond academics, Gartee is vice president of the Youth Advisory Council and leads the school’s Fellowship of Christian Athletes. In that role, he encourages younger students to engage in community service and to explore their faith. “Just trying to influence our students to get involved in our community,” he explained.
Gartee also participates in HOSA – Future Health Professionals, where he and a teammate taught peers about nutrition. Their team placed first at regional and state competitions and advanced to the international level in Indianapolis.
Athletics and personal goals
On the athletic side, Gartee plays basketball and previously competed in football and track. He says interacting with people is a core passion: “I really like just interacting with people, that’s what I love. So just trying to bring out the best in themselves while also trying to bring out the best in myself.”
Looking ahead, Gartee plans to become a pediatrician. He cites a fascination with the “natural order of the world” and a love for biology and human health. Two older brothers are already on the path to medical school, providing a family model of service.
College aspirations
Gartee has applied to the University of Michigan and the University of Toledo, saying his lifelong dream has always been to attend Michigan. He hopes his academic record, leadership experience and faith‑centered service will help him achieve that goal.
Teachers and staff at Bedford High agree that Gartee will leave a lasting impact wherever he goes. “If I had a son, I would say, go find Evan and do what he does,” Dennis said, underscoring the student’s role as a model for peers.
Gartee’s story exemplifies how a strong family foundation, Christian faith and a commitment to personal responsibility can shape a young person’s future while strengthening the broader community.
