Andele Restaurante Downtown Holds Down the Lunch Shift

If you work downtown and haven’t eaten at Andele on Water Street, you’ve probably walked past it a dozen times without stopping. That’s a mistake worth correcting.

Andele Restaurante sits on the south end of the downtown mall strip, a few blocks from the old train depot and close enough to the county offices that it fills up fast on weekdays. The dining room is nothing elaborate — tile floors, booths along the wall, a counter with stools. It’s clean and straightforward, which is about what you want when you’re hungry at noon and not looking to spend forty-five minutes on lunch.

The menu runs New Mexican through and through. Green chile is the default assumption here, not an upgrade. The enchiladas come smothered in a thick, house-made green that has some real heat behind it without being showy about it. Order them Christmas-style if you want both red and green — the red is earthy and deep, more complex than you’d expect from a spot this casual. The sopapillas arrive warm and puffy, and the honey on the table is there for a reason.

Breakfast is also worth knowing about. Andele opens early enough to catch the before-work crowd, and the breakfast burrito situation is solid. A chile relleno omelette sounds like a lot, because it is — it’s the kind of thing that keeps you going until dinner without thinking much about it. Coffee is diner-grade but hot and refilled without being asked.

Prices are fair by any standard. Most entrees land in the eight to fourteen dollar range. A full plate with rice, beans, and a drink is typically under fifteen dollars, which is harder to find downtown than it used to be. The portions are generous without being absurd.

Parking is the one logistical note worth mentioning. The downtown mall area has street parking and a couple of small lots, but it can get tight midday. A few blocks’ walk is usually the answer. If you’re coming from outside the immediate area, plan an extra five minutes.

Service is quick and matter-of-fact — they know the regulars, take new faces in stride, and move the room efficiently during the rush. It’s not the place for a long, leisurely meal on a Tuesday afternoon unless you’re going after 1:30 when things quiet down.

Andele is one of those places that doesn’t need to explain itself. It’s been feeding the downtown lunch crowd for years, and the formula works because it’s built on consistency rather than novelty. The green chile is good, the prices are honest, and they’re open when you need them. That covers most of what a working lunch spot needs to be.

It’s located at 222 S. Water Street. Hours run Monday through Saturday from morning through mid-afternoon, though it’s worth calling ahead to confirm, since they sometimes close early when they run through the day’s prep. Cash and cards are both accepted.
