Executives from American Airlines and Dallas‑Fort Worth International Airport gave North Texas residents a first look at the expanded Terminal A pier on Oct. 21. The new pier adds five brand‑new gates and rebuilds five existing ones, bringing the total to ten operational gates as the holiday travel season approaches.
Design and construction
The 140,000‑square‑foot perpendicular addition sits directly beneath the north Skylink station. Builders assembled the pier from seven pre‑fabricated modules that were constructed off‑site and moved across the airfield at night to keep flight operations running smoothly. The same modular method was used for the recent Terminal C expansion and is currently being applied to the new Terminal F project at the airport’s south end.
Features for travelers
Jim Moses, American Airlines senior vice president of DFW hub operations, described the remodeled Terminal A as “the future.” He highlighted electronic boarding gates, large windows that let in natural light, and power outlets at every seat – amenities that cater to families and business travelers alike.
With the expansion, Terminal A is set to become American’s busiest hub at DFW, eventually supporting more than 225 daily departures. “The Terminal A pier allows us to shift departures out of Terminal C, which is undergoing a complete reconstruction,” Moses explained.
Local businesses get a platform
DFW Airport’s executive vice president and chief revenue officer, Kenneth Buchanan, said focus groups and customer feedback shaped the design. “They told us they want more local experiences coming out of Dallas and Fort Worth and the region,” he said.
In response, south‑Dallas nonprofit Bonton Farms opened two markets in the Terminal A area, offering snacks, grab‑and‑go items, and merchandise sourced from its farms and the local coffee house Lettuce Cook on White Settlement Road. Other concessions include Mesero, an upscale Mexican restaurant, MAD Greens, and nationally recognized brands such as P.F. Chang’s, Auntie Anne’s and a 24‑hour Chick‑fil‑A.
Buchanan emphasized that while the brands are national, the outlets are owned by local small businesses, giving them exposure to hundreds of thousands of travelers. “DFW Airport is the economic engine of this region,” he said. “A great airport supports great cities, and the amount of opportunities that we’re able to provide to the communities of North Texas is just phenomenal.”
Impact on the community
The expansion not only improves the passenger experience but also creates jobs for North Texas residents, from construction workers to retail staff. By shifting departures from the under‑construction Terminal C, the new pier helps keep flight schedules on time, a benefit for families planning holiday trips.
American Airlines’ continued investment in DFW underscores the airport’s role as the airline’s largest hub and a critical link for the region’s economy. As the holiday travel period approaches, the expanded Terminal A pier stands ready to welcome travelers with modern amenities and a distinctly North Texas flavor.
