According to KOAT, the 2026 Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta welcomed more than 901,000 attendees, a rise of 50,000 visitors compared with the previous year. The surge in crowds generated an estimated $220 million economic impact for the city and state, echoing figures from past impact surveys.
Neil Jackson, president of the Balloon Fiesta Board, praised the event, saying, “From pilots and crews to guests on the field and fans watching on Balloon Fiesta Live!, this year’s Balloon Fiesta was an incredible success.” The nine‑day celebration ran Oct. 2‑10.
The busiest day was Saturday, Oct. 10, when an estimated 193,761 guests filled the park, followed by Friday, Oct. 9, with about 162,317 visitors. Restaurants across Albuquerque reported record‑breaking sales. Gilbert Sanchez, director of sales for Sadie’s of New Mexico, noted that the second Saturday set a single‑day sales record, with wait times of one to two hours.
“September is typically a slower month for the industry. We jump 70% in guests just for Balloon Fiesta alone. I think we were around 13,000 to 14,000 guests,” Sanchez added, explaining why many businesses hired extra staff and increased inventory.
Tania Armenta, president and CEO of Visit Albuquerque, said the festival continues to draw travelers who view it as a “bucket‑list” event, prompting many to drive or fly into the region. The influx also benefited small‑business owners. Jessie Campolo of Golden Needle Tattoo Studio reported a spike in visitors seeking permanent souvenirs, while Old Town merchants described the season as “one of the busier” they have experienced.
Although attendance fell short of the all‑time record of nearly 970,000 set during the 2023 solar‑eclipse celebration, the 2026 numbers still represent a significant boost for local commerce.
What’s next: The Balloon Fiesta will return Oct. 2‑10, 2027 under the theme “Adventure with Altitude,” promising another round of tourism and economic activity for Albuquerque.
