Albany’s Oldest Brewpub Survives on Stubbornness and Stout

Brown’s Brewing Company has been pouring pints in the Capital Region since 1993 — which means it was craft brewing before most Albany drinkers knew what craft brewing was. The main operation sits across the river in Troy, but the brand and its beers are so thoroughly woven into Albany’s bar culture that separating them feels artificial. If you’ve spent any time drinking seriously in this city, you’ve had a Brown’s pint. You may not have known it at the time.

Bob Brown, who co-founded the brewery with his wife Kelly, spent years building something that didn’t follow the usual playbook. He wasn’t chasing trends. The flagship beers — the Oatmeal Stout, the Revolution Rye, the Harvest Wheat — have stayed largely consistent for decades. That’s unusual in a market where taprooms rotate handles weekly and seasonal novelty is basically a business model. Brown says, in interviews and in person, that he’d rather perfect a beer than reinvent it every six months. That philosophy is either unfashionable or refreshing depending on who you ask. Among the regulars who’ve been coming since the mid-nineties, it’s the whole point.

The Oatmeal Stout is the one to start with. It’s rich without being cloying, with a dry finish that keeps you going back. On a cold Tuesday night, with a basket of the pretzel bites and a pint of that stout in front of you, it’s hard to argue with thirty years of consistency. The Revolution Rye IPA is a better pour than a lot of double dry-hopped experiments at newer spots — it has structure, a real malt backbone, and bitterness that doesn’t just flatten your palate.

The food program has always been taken more seriously here than at most brewpubs. The kitchen turns out burgers, flatbreads, and elevated bar snacks that hold up without trying to be a destination restaurant. The smoked wings have a following. Portions are generous and prices are fair — you’re rarely looking at more than $14 for an entree, and a flight of four beers runs around $10 to $12.

What makes Brown’s worth your time — beyond the beer — is the feel of the place on a weekday evening. It’s not performative. There’s no DJ, no trivia host with a wireless mic, no Instagram moment engineered into the décor. People come to drink, talk, and eat. The staff tends to be knowledgeable without being lecturing about it. Ask what’s fresh or what the brewer has been working on and you’ll get a real answer, not a pitch.

The Troy taproom on Monastery Street has the fuller experience, with the brewing operation visible from the bar and a larger patio. But for Albany drinkers, the beers are poured at enough local accounts — and the short drive across the river is worth making at least once — that Brown’s functions as a regional institution rather than a single fixed address.

In a region where breweries open and close with some regularity, there’s something grounding about a place that’s been at this since Bill Clinton’s first term and shows no signs of slowing down. Bob Brown isn’t chasing anything. The beers are where he wants them. That steadiness, in its own quiet way, is kind of remarkable.
