Akron’s Musketeer Bugg’s Wild Goose Lake Trail Proves City Parks Can Still Surprise You

There is a moment, about ten minutes into the Wild Goose Lake Trail at Firestone Metro Park, when the city noise simply stops. The traffic on Firestone Boulevard fades, the hum of everyday Akron dissolves into birdsong and rustling cattails, and you realize you are standing at the edge of something genuinely lovely — a glacier-carved lake ringed by hardwood forest, right inside the city limits. That realization alone is worth lacing up your sneakers for.

Firestone Metro Park sits in the southern part of Akron, anchored by the Coventry neighborhood and easily accessible from I-77. It is one of the Summit Metro Parks system’s oldest and most beloved properties, yet it draws a fraction of the crowds you might expect given how spectacular it is. The Wild Goose Lake Trail is the park’s crown jewel: a 1.5-mile paved loop that hugs the shoreline of the lake, dips into shaded woodland corridors, and opens onto wide meadow views that change character completely with the seasons.

Spring turns the trail edges into a riot of wildflowers — Virginia bluebells, trout lilies, and wild geraniums pushing up through the leaf litter while red-winged blackbirds stake their territories along the cattail marsh. Summer brings a slower, greener kind of magic, with great blue herons standing sentinel at the water’s edge and wood ducks gliding through reflections of the forest canopy. Fall is when photographers descend in earnest, and rightfully so: the oaks and maples surrounding Wild Goose Lake put on a show that rivals anything you would drive an hour to see in the countryside. Winter quiets the whole park to a hush, and the trail remains passable on most days, offering a rare kind of meditative solitude just minutes from downtown.

What makes this trail particularly appealing is its accessibility. The paved surface means it works equally well for strollers, wheelchairs, and casual walkers who do not necessarily want to wrestle with mud or roots. At the same time, the trail connects to longer unpaved loops within the park — including the Overlook Trail and the Tuscarawas Meadow Trail — for anyone who wants to push further into the woods. You can make an easy twenty-minute stroll of it or a vigorous two-hour ramble depending on your mood.

The park also features picnic shelters, a well-maintained restroom facility near the main parking area off Harrington Road, and a fitness loop that attracts regulars who treat the whole place as an outdoor living room. Come on a weekday morning and you will likely share the trail with a retired couple walking their dog, a young mother with a jogging stroller, and a birder scanning the reeds with binoculars — which tells you something important about who this place belongs to. Everyone.

Pack a lunch, bring a good pair of binoculars if you have them, and plan to stay longer than you think you need to. Wild Goose Lake has a way of holding you there. The trail loops back to the parking lot before you are quite ready to leave, and that, honestly, is the best possible sign of a place worth returning to.
