A heated debate in the historic Maryland community of Ellicott City has come to an end, with a judge ruling that giant peach and eggplant statues can stay on Main Street. The statues, part of the ‘Fund for Art in Ellicott City,’ were installed last year and have been a topic of discussion among residents and the Historic Preservation Commission.
The Debate
The commission had expressed concerns that the large peach and eggplant sculptures distracted from the historic buildings in the area and asked for their removal. However, many community members supported keeping the statues, with some even starting petitions to keep them.
According to Paula Dwyer, the owner of Georgia Grace Cafe, the community was largely in favor of keeping the statues. ‘Everybody on the street was signing. They came in, ‘Where can I sign these petitions? We want the peach to stay. We want it here. We love it,’ Dwyer said.
The judge’s ruling has been met with excitement from the community, with many residents happy to see the statues remain. As one local resident, Carlee Pugh, put it, ‘I don’t think it’s that serious. I think it’s a little fun piece of fruit, and if you’re going to get your panties in a twist about that, then that’s all you.’
