A family farm in Denmark, Wisconsin, is concerned about low market prices as egg production in the state drops 57% due to avian flu. The farm, Kellner Back Acre Garden, has a comfortable number of egg layers but is worried about the impact of low prices on their business.
Avian Flu Impact
The U.S. Department of Agriculture reports that Wisconsin produced 91.7 million eggs in April, down 57% from April 2025. The average number of egg layers in April 2026 was 3.69 million, a decrease from about 8.3 million birds in April 2025.
Nancy Kellner, whose son owns the farm, said that production at large commercial egg farms has been hit harder by the avian flu. She is concerned that the low prices will undercut the cost to produce eggs, making it difficult for the farm to break even.
