An hours-long standoff at a home in Overland Park, Kansas, ended in tragedy on Saturday when a man died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. The incident began just before 9:40 a.m. when officers responded to a 911 call for an armed disturbance at a residence in the 8600 block of Woodson Road, near 87th Street.
Police Response
According to Overland Park Police’s online calls for service log, a man called 911 saying his son had discharged a shotgun in the home due to a verbal dispute in the basement. Officers with the Overland Park Police’s Emergency Services Section and Crisis Negotiation Team responded to the scene, along with members of the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office.
A resident who lives a block north of the home reported noticing a large police presence on Woodson Road around 11 a.m. Overland Park Police issued an alert on social media just before 1:30 p.m., warning of a “large officer presence” in the area near 87th and Woodson.
Aftermath
After hours of negotiation, the suspect committed suicide by self-inflicted gunshot wound, according to Ofc. John Lacy, an Overland Park police spokesperson. At 3:57 p.m. on Saturday, Overland Park Police updated their social media post to say the “scene is now clear.”
