May Watts Park in Naperville appeared peaceful on the last day of spring, June 20, as the sun began to set. A 20-minute jaunt along the .89-mile trail around the pond revealed a great blue heron quietly catching a fish and swallowing it whole.
The park is also home to a family of geese, now united as one family of 14, with three adults and 11 goslings. The goslings, no longer covered in yellow down, were feeding in the grass between the concrete trail and the pond.
Other wildlife spotted during the evening walk included double-crested cormorants, noisy red-winged blackbirds, and one egret. A bullfrog was also seen splashing along the pond’s edge with another frog in its mouth.
Visitors to the park are reminded to let wildlife be wild, keep waterways clean, and pick up after pets. By doing so, we can help the ecosystem thrive and encourage natural migration.
