Corey Heim, a 23-year-old part-time driver from Marietta, Georgia, won his first NASCAR Cup Series victory at the inaugural San Diego race. Despite slamming into the wall twice and destroying his tires, Heim’s No. 67 Toyota kept getting faster, ultimately leading him to victory.
Heim’s Road to Victory
Heim took the lead from teammate Tyler Reddick in the final laps, securing his first win in only his 13th start. Bubba Wallace finished second, giving 23XI Racing a 1-2 finish. Reddick suffered a flat tire and fell to 25th, narrowing his lead in the standings to eight points over Denny Hamlin.
The win marked the second time in three years that an inaugural street race has produced a first-time winner in NASCAR’s premier series. Heim became the third first-time winner in Cup this season, joining Ty Gibbs and Carson Hocevar.
