Fathers have a crucial role in raising their sons to be men of God, strong in faith and character. The world often seeks to undermine traditional masculinity, promoting a culture of weakness and effeminacy. However, fathers are called to raise their sons as lions, warriors for God, who will stand up against the forces of darkness and fight for what is noble, right, and true.
The Importance of Discipline and Faith
True discipline is forged in love, and it is essential for boys to learn how to fight spiritually, resisting the temptations of wrath, sloth, gluttony, lust, envy, pride, and greed. Fathers must model for their sons what it means to be a man of God, self-disciplined, honest, brave, patient, forgiving, kind, loyal, truthful, dependable, compassionate, hardworking, humble, courageous, prayerful, and unwavering in faith.
Boys need to be challenged and encouraged to strive for excellence in all areas of life, whether in sports, academics, or manual labor. They must be taught to discern the truth and reject the lies of the world, holding fast to the calling of God to be His warriors. Fathers must surround their sons with other Godly men, building a brotherhood that will stand together against the evils of the world.
The battle for a son’s soul is very real, and fathers must pray for them daily, dressing them in the armor of God to defend themselves against the tactics of the enemy. As Fr. Lawrence Lavasik said, ‘Fatherhood is a vocation in God’s Service, not to be held lightly or frivolously, but with serious determination of serious men.’
