Kids in Maricopa County, Arizona, are building confidence by reading books to shelter dogs, improving their literacy skills and comforting the animals at the same time.
A Unique Classroom
The Maricopa County Animal Care and Control’s reading program has become one of summer’s most unique classrooms, where kids like Noah Witter sharpen their literacy skills while dogs waiting for adoption get some much-needed attention.
Noah’s mother says the program has helped her son open up and want to read books, as animals are a little bit more comforting to him, making it easier for him to read the text and be more engaged in the book.
The best part of the program is that there are no book reports and no grades, just a growing confidence and wagging tails, leaving most wishing they could take one home right then and there.
