Louisiana residents seeking prescription weight-loss medications now have a new option that could make treatment more accessible. A recent change in state law allows patients to obtain prescriptions for GLP-1 medications, such as Wegovy and Ozempic, through telehealth consultations rather than requiring an in-person doctor’s visit.
Telehealth Expansion
The change applies to medications commonly used to help patients manage obesity and related health conditions. According to data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, about 40% of Louisiana adults are obese, meaning they have a body mass index (BMI) of at least 30. The state ranks third nationally for obesity prevalence.
Dr. Maurie Patterson-Rosen of Willis Knighton’s Metabolic Disease and Obesity Clinic said telehealth offers significant convenience and can help patients stay engaged with their treatment plans. However, she noted that telehealth also has limitations, such as the inability to perform physical exams or lab work.
Supporters of the law change argue that expanding access to obesity treatment could benefit public health. As advances in artificial intelligence and robotics continue to reshape daily life and potentially contribute to more sedentary lifestyles, increasing access to weight-management tools may help more people maintain healthier weights and reduce obesity-related health risks.
