Speaking of Hog Island: if you visit on a Saturday and don’t stop for a dozen oysters with a cold glass of Muscadet while watching the ferries glide across the bay, you have missed the point entirely. The raw bar fills up fast, so arrive by 9 a.m. if you want a seat at the counter. There is something almost meditative about sitting there, tasting the clean, briny Pacific in each shell, with Marin County visible just across the water.

Cowgirl Creamery’s outpost here is the ideal place to pick up a round of Mt Tam triple-cream or a wedge of aged Red Hawk. Recchiuti Confections handles the chocolate side of things with elegant, adult-oriented bonbons that make exceptional gifts — if you can resist eating them before you leave the building.
The neighborhood is the Embarcadero, right at the foot of Market Street, and access couldn’t be easier. The F-Market streetcar drops you directly in front, and the waterfront path stretches out in both directions if you want to extend your morning with a walk toward the Bay Bridge or up toward Fisherman’s Wharf.
