The Iowa Department of Agriculture & Land Stewardship is dedicating over $746,000 to urban water quality projects in Altoona, Asbury, Des Moines, and Osceola. This brings the total investment up to nearly $3.04 million following the first round of funding in May.
Local Impact
In Des Moines, $150,000 will support improvements at Birdland Park aimed at capturing and treating stormwater runoff. In Altoona, $100,000 will help build a community produce garden at Caring Hands Outreach Center, along with a rainwater harvesting system for irrigation.
Secretary Naig stated, “Clean water is non-negotiable, and these projects demonstrate how communities big and small are stepping up to be part of the solution.” Improving water quality requires a system-wide approach from farm to faucet, and these investments will help reduce runoff, protect local waterways, and create lasting benefits for the people who live, work, and recreate in these communities.
