The San Antonio Police Department is highlighting the importance of safely storing firearms to prevent accidental shootings. According to SAPD Sgt. Joshua Bagley, proper handling, cleaning, and storage of a firearm are crucial for responsible gun ownership.
Safe Storage Methods
Bagley emphasized the use of a gun safe or a simple gun lock, which can be purchased at most sporting goods or gun stores, to prevent unauthorized access to firearms. He also stressed the importance of keeping fingers off the trigger until ready to shoot.
SAPD public information officer Emily Garvin noted that training is essential for everyone, even those who have previously used a firearm. The department offers training on operating a gun safely for the public and requires it for officers.
Accidental Shootings Decrease
Between January 1, 2026, and June 1, 2026, SAPD responded to 20 accidental shootings, a decrease from the 61 reported in the same timeframe in 2025. The department aims to eliminate accidental shootings altogether.
San Antonio residents over 18 can apply to the Citizen Police Academy to learn more about safe gun usage, cleaning, storage, and other topics.
