New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani made a sharp call for change in the Democratic Party on Thursday night as he rallied with his slate of progressive congressional candidates in the upcoming Democratic primaries.
Challenging the Status Quo
Mamdani’s remarks were made at a rally headlined by Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders, where he emphasized the need for material change for working people. He criticized the party for managing decline instead of delivering change and for explaining why things cannot be done instead of showing how they can.
Mamdani’s insistence that the Democratic Party, as it currently exists, will be unable to win a presidential election again marks a new line of critique for the 34-year-old democratic socialist. His anti-establishment campaign last year broke new ground for the progressive movement.
Mamdani is testing his political influence by endorsing three progressives in New York’s Democratic primaries: Assemblymember Claire Valdez, former city comptroller Brad Lander, and educator and immigrant rights activist Darializa Avila Chevalier. Valdez is running for retiring Rep. Nydia Velazquez’s seat, while Lander and Chevalier are challenging incumbents Rep. Dan Goldman and Rep. Adriano Espaillat, respectively.
Response to Criticism
Mamdani’s support for Chevalier has drawn scrutiny due to her deleted social media posts disparaging Democratic leaders and her attendance at a pro-Palestinian rally. House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, who has endorsed both Goldman and Espaillat, stated that he and Mamdani have agreed to strongly disagree on this particular race.
Mamdani also criticized what he called ‘monsters’ that include those who fund television ads with misleading and bad faith attacks against his endorsed candidates. He specifically targeted the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC), which has spent millions to boost pro-Israel candidates in congressional primaries this year.
