A long stretch of warm, dry weather has led to the elevation of local fire danger to ‘high’ in the Jackson area, specifically in Bridger-Teton National Forest (BTNF), the National Elk Refuge, and Grand Teton National Park (GNTP) land.
Fire Safety Precautions
To determine fire danger, experts consider factors such as forecasted temperatures and wind, how fast fires can grow, availability of firefighting resources, and moisture content in plants. So far this year, 38 unattended campfires have been found and put out in the area.
In locations where fires are permitted, it is essential to follow safety tips to keep the fire under control, including never leaving a campfire unattended, having a shovel and water bucket on hand, and using several gallons of water to fully extinguish the campfire.
The agency also reminds folks that, as Independence Day approaches, fireworks are strictly prohibited in GTNP, BTNF, and the National Elk Refuge. To report a fire or smoke in the immediate area, call the Teton Interagency Fire Dispatch Center at (307) 739-3630.
