A columnist still has and uses the radio that kept him, his cousin, and best friend company during the summer of the 1976 American Bicentennial celebrations.
A Carefree Summer
In the summer of 1976, three kids in Arkansas decided to live in a camper in the columnist’s backyard. The columnist’s cousin Randy was visiting from Alvin, Texas, and the columnist’s best friend Clint would often join them. They spent their days riding bikes, mowing lawns to earn money, and enjoying each other’s company in their makeshift clubhouse.
At night, they would play cards, listen to music, and talk about their lives. The columnist remembers the summer fondly, as a time of freedom and adventure. As the summer drew to a close, the friends cleaned out the camper and went their separate ways, but the memories of that carefree summer have stayed with the columnist to this day.
The columnist believes that teens deserve carefree years, and encourages them to use their summers to bond, live life, and enjoy their youth. The summer of 1976 was a special time, one that the columnist will always treasure.
