Georgetown’s Historic Howard School Gets a New Life as Head Start Facility

A beloved piece of Georgetown’s history is breathing new life. The historic Howard School — long a landmark of the city’s African American educational heritage — has been restored and repurposed as a Head Start Administration Annex, giving the storied building a meaningful new role in the community.

The transformation was reported this week by both WCBD News 2 and Live 5 News, which described the project as a restoration of the historic Black school into a facility that will support early childhood education services. The move ensures that the building, rather than falling into disrepair, continues to serve Georgetown’s families and children for generations to come.

The project reflects a growing appreciation in Georgetown for preserving the physical reminders of its rich and complex history while putting them to practical, community-centered use. Head Start programs provide early learning, health, and family support services to children from low-income households, making the Howard School’s new chapter both historically resonant and socially impactful.

It was a milestone week for community spirit in Georgetown in other ways as well. On Sunday, June 14, the city kicked off its Juneteenth celebrations early with a community block party, according to WCBD News 2 — bringing residents together ahead of the June 19th holiday to celebrate freedom, culture, and community pride.
